ClimTourFIT - Mountain Tourism in the Province of Lower Austria

Mountain tourism destinations in the Province of Lower Austria (Mostviertel and Wiener Alpen) are confronted with various challenges: e.g. out-migration, aging population and outdated tourism infrastructure. In addition, the struggling tourism industry, particularly snow-based tourism, is further challenged by climate variability and change.

In the first stage, potential impacts of climate change on summer and winter tourism are examined. Special emphasis is placed on the future snow-reliability of the ski areas applying SkiSim, a ski season and snowmaking simulation model. In the second stage, scenarios for future tourism will be developed taking into account both climatic and non-climatic change factors.

This will be done in close cooperation with selected stakeholders in order to come up with feasible and widely accepted adaptation strategies.
