Project Information

MOREXPERT I – Developing a Monitoring Expert System for Hazardous Rock Walls

MOREXPERT I investigates the occurrence of rockfall in the permafrost-affected summit region of the Kitzsteinhorn (3.203 m), Hohe Tauern Range, Austria. Surface, subsurface, and atmospheric conditions are monitored based on a combination of borehole measurements, geophysical surveys, terrestrial laserscanning, geotechnical investigations, and recordings at automated weather stations.

MOREXPERT I therefore addresses the need for systematically collected, long-term data on the complex relationship between recent climate warming and destabilization in high-alpine rock faces. Particular attention is devoted to the investigation of permafrost distribution and permafrost dynamics in steep bedrock.

Based on an improved understanding of the short- and medium-term responses of the thermal state of high mountain rock slopes, MOREXPERT I targets the development of an expert system for slope stability assessment in steep bedrock.
