Project Information

Subproject A1 – Regional Analysis of Shallow Geothermal Potential

Shallow geothermal energy is primarily used to provide heating and cooling in detached and multi-family houses. The small, individual plants currently in use have little impact on the environment. But what would the effects of a region-wide, extensive usage of this near-surface energy be? Would we cool down the subsurface? What are the limits of regenerative (and thus sustainable) usage, and how much energy can be provided in total?

In this project, we are working on a holistic approach for determining a region’s shallow geothermal potential. We have identified important environmental, technical, and socio-economic factors, combining them in an integral GIS-based model.
