Impacts of Global Climate Change on Alpine Tourism

Climate change causes a change in the availability of natural resources required by the tourism industry, i.e. warm dry weather in summer and cold, snow-rich winters. While the impacts of climate change on winter tourism are expected to be negative, alpine summer tourism is thought to profit from climate change.

The project KlimTour investigates the impacts of climate change on tourism in Tyrol. Hereby not only the impacts of climate change on the supply side of touristic offerings in Tyrol and competing regions are investigated, but also impacts on the demand side, that is the countries of origin of tourists. Only such a comprehensive view including supply and demand side and natural environmental as well as socio-economic considerations will lead to adequate adaptation strategies for the tourism
