Subproject B – Biogenic Waste Potentials

Within the energy mix of the future methane will play a major role as a universally useful and flexible energy source.

Due to the intensive tourism in the Alps a high amount of organic waste and grease are generated in the gastronomy sector. These organic materials cause big technical problems in waste water treatment plants but are also considered as an important substrate resource for energy production in biogas plants.

The aim of this project is to assess the potentials and the quality of food waste from the gastronomy sector for energy production and to develop new systems for substrate preparation. Furthermore, current logistic concepts and waste collection systems will be adapted and possible impacts from climate change on the logistic chain and the energy production process will be evaluated.
