Subproject A - Multiscale Snow – Ice Melt Discharge Simulations for Alpine Reservoirs

In the MUSICALS A project, the spatial and temporal patterns of runoff generation in high Alpine catchments were analysed. A snow-hydrological energy and mass balance model was created for the study area in the Ötztal Alps (Tyrol, Austria). Using a set of airborne laser scanning observations of the winter snow cover acquired during the course of the project, a novel parameterization for a (solid) precipitation correction field based on topography was developed.

The application of this precipitation redistribution method in combination with additional model improvements resulted in a considerably improved reproduction of snow distribution and runoff. The follow-up project MUSICALS II focuses in particular on applying the model setup to generate seasonal forecasts and climate scenarios.
