Sustainable River Management – evaluating the effect of hydropower management on stream ecology climate protection goals (SuREmMa)

In order to achieve climate protection goals on national and EU level, an increase in the share of renewable energies is needed. Hydropower is an important component of the renewable energy sources. Storage hydropower stations are of particular importance since they are able to dampen grid fluctuations through short-term and flexible power production.

However, discharge fluctuations (i.e. alternation of discharge peaks and low flows) caused by hydropower management may affect the ecological functioning of a stream since these fluctuations are triggered artificially and not connected to the natural discharge regime.

The effects of hydropower production on stream ecology are analysed in the SuREmMa project. Based on the project results, measures to improve stream ecology will be developed. The effects of these measures will be evaluated with respect to the implementation of energy and climate policy goals.
