Climate Risk Assessment for the TMAT Railway Modernization Project

Climate risk and vulnerability assessment and simplified greenhouse gas emissions calculation for a railway modernization project in Turkmenistan

Climate Risk Assessment for the TMAT Railway Modernization Project

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has contracted BERNARD Gruppe to prepare a feasibility study for the Turkmenabat-Mary-Ashgabat-Turkmenabashi (Turkmenistan) Railway Modernization Project. A climate change expert and a hydrologist from alpS are supporting BERNARD with a Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA) and a simplified greenhouse gas estimation. The CRVA follows the methodology set out by various ADB guidelines and provides information on the climate change context of the project as well as assessment of climate impacts, vulnerability and adaptation measures. The main climate risks are temperature and water related, whereas extreme heat, water scarcity and mud flows on the foothills of the Kopetdag mountain range are of particular concern. GHG emissions are calculated using the Transport Emissions Evaluation Model for Projects (TEEMP) methodology proposed by the ADB.
