Flood risk analysis: comparison of risk assessment tools

Flood risk analysis: comparison of risk assessment tools

Following the devastating floods in Germany in 2024, which caused significant property damage, a nationwide asset management company wanted to evaluate its flood risk assessment tools. As part of the project, a comprehensive analysis of the results of proprietary flood risk assessment tools was carried out to assess the validity and comparability of different systems. The work involved a systematic survey of properties in Germany using the official flood hazard maps as a reference.

The project focused on comparing the risk assessment of different tools, looking at both riverine and coastal flooding. The aim was to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each tool and to derive recommendations for more accurate risk assessment. The results form the basis for the further development of (climate) risk assessment methods to better protect existing and future investments.
